The Central Railway (CR) is likely to partially open the Seawoods-Uran railway line in November 2018. The project was first planned in 1997
The project will augment the Harbour rail network that will allow expansion of suburban local trains right till Raigad district. The railway line will go till Kharkopar in Phase-I which will benefit people staying in Navi Mumbai
A series of checks and inspections were conducted on the new line by CR and it is now awaiting approvals from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Once the paperwork and processes are in place, the rail line between Belapur-Kharkopar-Nerul section will be opened to public by November 2018
Of the 25 km, 12 km will be opened. The rail lines will connect the Navi Mumbai Airport as well via Targhar, Sagarsangam and Bamandongri. The project will connect newly rising suburbs of Ulwe, close to which the Navi Mumbai airport is under construction
In order to complete the remaining part of the project, a land parcel of around 2.5 to three km has to be acquired between Kharkopar and Ranjanpada. The rail authorities and state government is working on acquiring the land parcel
The cost of the project has been escalated from Rs 495 crore to Rs 1,800 crore. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2020
Phase-II of the project will have stations at Gaavan, Ranjanpada, Nhava-Sheva, Dronagiri and Uran. The entire project will have nine road-over-bridges and 15 road-under-bridges
There are over 12 lakh commuters who travel on Harbour and Trans-harbour lines
