Construction of the ITO Skywalk, the Capital’s longest foot overbridge, is expected to begin only after Diwali next week due to issues related to land acquisition, sources claim

The Public Works Department (PWD) had recently finalised and awarded the tender for construction of the 523-metre, 41 crore project which will be equipped with lifts and escalators in addition to stairs

Site offices

It will connect Tilak Marg, Sikandra Road, Mathura Road and Bahadurshah Zafar Marg with the ITO metro station and the Delhi High Court through sturdy metallic ramps and overhead canopies within six months of commencement of construction, according to a senior government official

We have begun establishing site offices on Tilak Marg and adjacent locations to oversee the construction. however, certain modalities related to the acquisition of land belonging to the Indian Railways, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) are in the process of being worked out,” said a source

As the process is still under way, construction is only expected to commence after Diwali and latest by the end of the month,” the source added

As per the plan, fabricated iron plates will be used to construct access ramps which will also be accessible by lifts for the differently-abled, leading to the tiled surface of the FOB. In addition, ACP cladding, tensile cloth, stainless steel and 10 mm clear glass will constitute weather-protecting overhead canopies with openings on either side and solar panels atop

The Skywalk's length will be around 523 metres and be a steel structure having pile or isolated RCC footing

Granite flooring

The deck and staircase will be made of steel and granite flooring will be used on the steps of the staircase and granite or vitrified tiles will compose the flooring of the Skywalk deck in addition to stainless steel railings on the staircase. As many as eight lifts with individual carrying capacities of 20 persons would also be a significant part of the design

After a recent directive by the NITI Aayog, which allowed bidders of government construction projects to suggest the best design for the project, the cost of the project had seen a reduction of around 17 crore

Cost down to 42 crore

Bidders were encouraged to prepare “innovative and cost-effective” Concept Designs which were, simultaneously, “unique, highly functional and aesthetic” in an Open Design Competition. According to the official, bids were called in July, 2015 and saw as many as 20 firms participating in the competition

According to the official, the initial cost of the project was pegged around 59 crore. However, the estimate was recast and first brought down to a little over 44 crore which has now been brought to below 42 crore due to design modifications suggested by the bidder
