Value: 221 Crore | The revamped project, which would ease connectivity from Lal Ghati to the airport is back on track. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will construct an 8-km flyover connecting Lal Ghati to Gandhi Nagar along with a grid separator at Lal Ghati intersection and much-needed rail-over-bridge (RoB) at Singarcholi
The project will cost Rs 221 crore and will be completed in 24 months, said MLA (Huzur) Rameshwar Sharma, The project has been revived and construction of ROB at Singarcholi would begin by next month," he said. Sharma toured the site along with experts from the NHAI, the new agency, which is entrusted to complete the project already delayed by three years
The project connecting Bhopal to Biora envisaged construction of 8 km-long service roads in Bhopal city, included much-needed ROB at Singarcholi leading to Bhopal airport. The development is likely to come as a relief for residents living in Panchwati locality and beyond. For long, residents of the area are demanding flyover to get over problem of traffic jams triggered due to frequent closing of railway gates
New dimension to project is proposed grid separator at Lal Ghati, once of the most accident-prone roads in the state capital. As per police records, there were one road accident death every third day in the area till July 2017
Initiatives like grid-separators and expansion of existing roads are seen as short-term solutions to de-congest traffic issues. However, it is not clear how the project would adapt as metro rail is planned on the same route at Lal Ghati intersection
In June 2016, the state government had cancelled the contractor for the 105-km four-lane connecting Bhopal-Biaora Road (National Highway-12). Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan laid the stone for project in October 2014. Then it was pegged at Rs 776 crore. Chouhan set a deadline of one year for construction of ROB, part of Rs 776.24-crore project for widening the 105.6-km Bhopal-Biora Road. Four laning of Bhopal-Biaora (NH-12) was sanctioned by the Union ministry of road transport and highways. Sources said NHAI is likely to take a lead in the project
